Minor scales: the same notes, a new home

Here is the surprise that unlocks everything ahead: minor is not a different set of notes. Play the white keys from C and you get the major scale, bright and settled. Play the very same white keys but treat A as home, and the exact same seven notes turn dark and searching. Nothing was added or taken away. Only the center moved. Learn to hear that move and you have found the door that every mode walks through.

Move the home

Start on Minor, home A and press play: dark, unresolved, the sound of a thousand sad songs. Now switch the home to Major, home C. Listen closely, because this is the trick: the notes did not change. Both scales are the white keys. Only the note you rest on moved.

Live demo: the same seven notes, a movable home

That is the entire idea, and it is bigger than minor. If moving home from C to A gives you a whole new mood out of the same notes, then there must be five other homes in there too, five other moods hiding in one set of seven notes. There are, and they are the modes. Minor is simply the most famous of them, the one that earned its own name.

The same notes, a new center

C major and A minor are built from identical pitches, so they are called relative keys: same notes, different home. Every major scale has a relative minor sitting a minor third below its home (the minor third from the triads article, three semitones down), and every minor scale has a relative major a minor third above. This is why the circle of fifths pairs them: relatives share a key signature because they share every note.

The version you just heard, the pure "same notes, new home" scale, is called natural minor. It is the honest minor, the one the modes are made of. But it has a problem, and fixing that problem is where the other two minors come from.

Why minor sounds minor

Before the fix, the mood. What makes minor sound minor is one note: the third. Home to third in major is four semitones, the bright major third; in minor it is three, the minor third. Everything else can wait, that one lowered note is most of the darkness. If you have read the triads article this is the same major-versus-minor switch you heard there, now stretched across a whole scale instead of a single chord. Minor is a scale built on a minor third the way major is built on a major one.

Three minors, and the pull toward home

Natural minor's problem is the top. In major, the seventh note sits one semitone below home and leans hard upward into it; that magnetic note is the leading tone, and it is what makes a major cadence feel like an arrival. Natural minor has no leading tone. Its seventh is a whole step below home (G up to A), a gentle lean, not a pull, so endings feel soft and open.

Composers wanted the pull back. So:

  • Harmonic minor raises the seventh a semitone (G becomes G#), rebuilding the leading tone. Now minor can slam home as decisively as major. The cost is a wide, exotic gap that opens between the sixth and the raised seventh, the sound your ear files under "Spanish" or "Middle Eastern."
  • Melodic minor smooths that gap by also raising the sixth on the way up (F and G both lift to F# and G#), so an ascending line glides. Classically the raises are undone coming back down; in jazz the raised version is kept and becomes a scale all its own.

Switch between the three in the demo and listen only to the top of each climb. The story of the three minors is really the story of one missing magnet and two different ways of putting it back.

In your music

Reach for natural minor when you want the open, modal, unresolved feeling of most pop, rock, and electronic music, it does not beg to resolve, so it loops forever without tiring. Reach for harmonic minor at a cadence when you want minor to land with real finality, or when you want that dramatic raised-seventh color on purpose. Melodic minor is a melodist's and a jazz player's tool, for lines that need to climb smoothly.

And hold onto the keyhole, because the next article walks straight through it.
